Hi there

I have an old GametheaterXP sound card, and it has been a great soundcard for ages. But recently the front-left output seems to have died in the ass. The rear outputs still work perfectly fine, though. What I would like to know, is if, in software somehow, the sound that normally goes to the fronts can be redirected to the rear ouput of the soundcard? If its possible in software, then I can use my good old soundcard and have true hardware mixing via ALSA (I think..).

How can I do this, if it's possible?

Cheers

Try unmuting "Duplicate front" in alsamixer (if you have that option) and raise volume level of rear speakers too I suppose.

Oh wow, thanks. I have it for my onboard sound, so I'll give that a shot with the other soundcard.

Cheers.

Dang, no dice with that option; it's not there on this sound card :(

Any other ideas? I have it "working" at the moment, but the rear output doesn't work the same as the fronts... they don't use the same volume levels... is there any way to make the surround use the same volume controls as fronts?

Well I've managed to coerce somewhat Alsa to use my rear speakers by default by messing about a bit in /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf ... but then the volume changing things don't work; I have to either set xmms to software mixing (less than optimal), or load up alsamixer to change volume of Surround... PCM doesn't change the volume of rears, and whatever the hotkeys does when i press my volume up/down keys, it doesn't change anything (assuming its using Master, which rears doesn't seem to respond to)..

So its a bit of a failure really... :/
