Detects Laserjet but still won't print

I have an HP Laserjet 5L. It detects it at boot. I add it using cups. I send a test print job which it says it sent successfully, but nothing happens. The printer just sits there.

I've emerged hpijs, gimp-print, and foomatic.

Any ideas?

check the log files in /var/log/cups
