Did you mount the boot partition at /boot/ ?

but then i get ANOTHER line saying "cannot find /dev/hde" why exactly would it need to find hde? Do I need put /dev/hde in the fstab? I've really trying installing gentoo many times, and sadly, am not smart enough to figure it all out.
Did you add "devfs=mount" to the kernel line in grub.conf or in the append line of lilo.conf?

yep, mounted both and appended that statement, makes no difference =(

And does /proc exist (try mkdir /proc) and is it mounted at boot (see your fstab)?
