Posting your grub.conf file might actually enable someone to help you. _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto

If you don't have multiple processors or a P4 with HyperThreading then the SMP
kernel will not boot on your system. Try compiling a kernel without SMP to
see if you can boot then.
Also definatly post your grub.conf from /boot (if you followed the guide fully)
To get at it you will probably have to boot the live CD again and follow the
guide until you are in your chrooted environment. Then you can make
changes to your configuration.

Wrong. |
Ok then, I stand corrected. In what cases is this possible?
Do you have to do something to allow an SMP kernel to boot
on a non MP machine?
I recall trying an SMP kernel (by accident) back in Gentoo1.4
on my AMD K7 machine with absolutely no luck. Once the SMP
kernel option was turned off (recompiled kernel) everything worked again. _________________ "Against stupidity, the Gods themselves contend in vain."

Nope, it Just Works - provided that the kernel isn't compiled for an entirely different architecture, of course. _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto

Hmm, interesting. Chances are that my problem kernel was compiled
for the wrong architecture since it was all default settings.
Are there any benefits or problems created when using and SMP kernel
on an non-MP machine? Slower? Faster? better/worse process handling?
Just curious.

It will take up a bit more memory, but memory is cheap these days. _________________ Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved. Marginally slower, and you might run into problems with some binary-only modules (but only if you're not careful which one you pick). _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto
