The last 2 lines are:

undefined reference to '___stack_smash_handler'
make: *** [.tmp-vmlinux1] Error 1

Did anybody know what is this all about?

Greetings Marc

That is way too little information.

Please post:
1. The type of kernel source used
2. Output from 'emerge info'
3. At least the last 30-40 lines of output.

sounds like you updated to gcc-3.4.0-r3, I get a similar error when building mysql:
Code:
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.0/libstdc++.so: undefined reference to `__guard@GCC_3.0'
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.0/libstdc++.so: undefined reference to `__stack_smash_handler@GCC_3.0'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [mysqladmin] Error 1

and (r2) is gone, so no easy way back I guess....

ldd /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/3.4.0/libstdc++.so for me. does it link against the 3.3.3 libgcc_s?

EDIT: nevermind, i think i see what the problem is. crap... i'll get to fixing this now
EDIT#2: the gcc-3.4.0-r4 ebuild now in portage fixes this problem. give it some time to reach rsync and avoid r3...
EDIT#3: i'm currently doing a reinstall from scratch, so please dont be mad at me if this accidentally broke your install :'(

I would have to agree. It was the amd64 support that made this long time Redhat fan move to Gentoo. Only wish I had made the move sooner. I am very impressed in how far Gentoo amd64 has moved in comparison to any other distribution. Thanks for all work you put into this Lv - it is appreciated. may large sums of money find its way to your pocket.
