Well, this is the hardest time I've ever had setting up a dialup connection. It's been a couple years since I had to, so maybe I am just rusty. I've been spoiled by DSL for too long. Anyway ... setting up Gentoo on a friend's box and using an Elsa Microlink external modem that works flawlessly with Linux. Again, the modem works fine. Dials in, connects, all systems go ... but browsing doesn't work. Opera, Konqueror ... nothing. ifconfig shows ppp0 up and running, I can ping successfully ... but I can't use the darn browser. I just don't understand. /etc/resolv.conf has the local ISPs nameservers listed ... but still no browser. Please let me know what you think.

Neuros.

Does route show up the default gateway linked to the modem?

Hmmm ... don't even know how to check ...

[edit]:: Ahh ... 'route' does show ppp0 as the default route ... the nameservers that kppp writes are correct as far as I can find. but still, I can only type in IPs in a browser.

Start by trying to ping a known IP address to determine if you're having a routing/connectivity problem or a name resolution problem.

I usually use google: 216.239.39.99
