PostPosted: Thu May 20, 2004 9:37 pm    Post subject: Freecom external usb harddrive Reply with quote

I've just got a Freecom external 160GB USB hardrive, which is very nice, except I can't get it to work on Linux (I've tried two SuSE versions plus my Gentoo box, details of which are below.

It seems to work on a Windows box.

My USB card reader is working (though the /dev/sda* files are only created if its plugged in with a card on boot, otherwise they don't exist when the machine boots and it won't work. I don't know if this is a related problem or not). I also have ethernet over USB working to my Zaurus. However, I can't get the external drive to work.

I have USB debugging switched on in the kernel (2.4.24).

When I plug in the drive, I get the following output in /var/log/messages:
Code:

If anyone has any ideas about what I'm missing, I'd very much like to hear them.

Thanks.

looks like the device is failing pretty soon after plug-in... i wouldnt say that you are missing anything
it might be worth trying a 2.6 kernel, as USB is more up-to-date over there
i'd suggest development-sources-2.6.6

Hmm... seems extreme. Can I switch between 2.4 and 2.6 kernels reasonably safely? Looking at the kernel compile docs for gentoo, 2.6 seems relatively straightforward. Is it just a case of building the new kernel, and sticking an option in Grub? Or are there other 'gotchas' in system configuration?

Do the NVIDIA drivers work under 2.6? I noticed X wouldn't start when I tried the 2.4.26 kernel (which I tried upgrading to to fix this problem), and I'm assuming that it's an NVIDIA issue. Does the NVIDIA module need a rebuild? (re-emerge the nvidia module?)

Pretty much. You can have kernel versions 2.4 and 2.6 on the same system, as different entries under grub. As for 2.6, the entire process is quite similar. Just *don't* copy over your 2.4 .config and use "make oldconfig", make sure that you configure it from scratch.

It doesnt matter if when you boot up to 2.6, something isnt working quite right. As long as you get to a console, you should be able to plug your USB disk in and see what happens, and save the dmesg output to a file.

Every time you change kernel, you need to re-merge the nvidia stuff. Thats normal. nvidia does work under 2.6 - but you should use the latest available - 1.0.5336-r3.

to get this, you can do:
Code:
mkdir /etc/portage
echo "media-video/nvidia-kernel ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "media-video/nvidia-glx ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

the above is effectively telling portage to use the latest available in the testing branch for the nvidia stuff, as opposed to just looking in the "stable" branch.

Good. I'll give that a try when I get home then and see what happens.

Thanks for the pointers.

I've now got 2.6 (sort of) working, and the USB drive works fine. Looks like I'm going to me moving to 2.6 sooner than I thought.

Thanks for the help.
