Hello Everyone,

I've made it to section 8.6 in the install guide and have been very careful not to overlook any details. I was able to mount the /proc filesystem with no problem and was also able to cp /etc/resolv.conf to /mnt/gentoo/etc/resolv.conf. When I try to change the root directory by doing a chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash, I get the error "chroot: /bin/bash: No such file or directory". I've scoured through the documentation, read many posts on this board, and tried countless google searches to no avail.

Anyone have any ideas?

Much Appreciated.

Did you extract the tarball to the right directory?

I did everything exactly as instructed in the install.html file. /bin/bash exists if that's what you're asking.

Does /mnt/gentoo/bin/bash exist?

It appears that /mnt/gentoo/bin/bash doesn't exist. Do I need to create it then?

If I am not completely mistaken, the chroot command calls /bin/bash from the current "environment", I mean the OS and filesystem that was booted from the Live CD. This should work wether you extracted the stage tarball to the right directory or not.

Try "ls -l /bin/bash". What does it say?

Also, if /mnt/gentoo/bin/bash exists, you could try to copy it over to /bin.

ls -l /bin/bash
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 686856 Feb 15 2003 /bin/bash

/mnt/gentoo/bin/bash does not exist, but all of the proper files seem to located in the /bin directory.

Sounds like the tarball wasn't extracted properly. Make sure your root partition is mounted at /mnt/gentoo and any other partitions you need (like /boot for example) are mounted inside /mnt/gentoo and try extracting the tarball again. Make sure you
Code:
cd /mnt/gentoo
before extracting the tarball as the CWD is where it will be extracted to.

I'm having the same problem, but the tarball is extracted to the correct spot. Very annoying, I even tried using a Knoppix LiveCD with the same result (not working).
