Does anyone knows a good incremental backup tool? I'd like to do an incremental back-up of my local texmf dir (that's getting quite big lately :) ) to cd's.

What is wrong with tar?

If you like a ncurses interface, you can try mondo-rescue . It is supposed to be more user friendly, and goes right to disk. I never used it, but have heard of people being very happy with it.

I never used it, because I am happy with tar.

just a comment on amanda (yes ive actually set it up and made it working, althought this was on a debian comp),
it is another nominee for the linux "worst documentation" awards, yes there is a wiki with some info, but really, the config files are cryptic at best, and documentation is hard to come by.
it COULD offcourse be that just my tapechanger and tapedrive was the problem, but we had to fiddle around with a LOT of things to make it work properly. not recommending against it, but if you want something simple, look elsewhere.

later we found out that amanda ran much better under *bsd, but oh well, another discussion.

Can tar handle incremental backups ? I like the concept of K.I.S.S. :)

I thought sticking with tar (no pun intended!) was keeping it simple :0). The following comes from the tar man page:

Quote:

-G, --incremental
create/list/extract old GNU-format incremental backup

-g, --listed-incremental F
create/list/extract new GNU-format incremental backup

--remove-files
remove files after adding them to the archive

-r, --append
append files to the end of an archive

It seems that at least one of these options should do the trick...

Personally, I never bother with incremental... too much of a hassle at restore time -- especially if I am not there to restore. But, I understand that sometimes it is a necessary evil.

Anyway, you could give those options a shot, or try one of the other's mentioned.
