I can't seem to get it off the system..
I had it on from my first build of the system then someone said install metalog for various reasons and I did (am happier with metalog), but now I get this when ever I emerge things..
Code:
 * Caching service dependencies...
 *  Service 'syslog-ng' already provide 'logger'!;
 *  Not adding service 'metalog'...

How do I fix this?

try first unmerging syslog-ng, before emerging metalog

If that doesn't work, check the file /var/cache/edb/virtuals, and find the line which says virtual/logger. I'm not sure, but you can probably delete the line, then emerge metalog.

Do you still have syslog-ng in your rc-levels?
rc-update -s
Is it listed there?
Did you do a rc-update del syslog-ng?
When unmerging such daemons all configs and scripts remain in /etc - so there is still the /etc/init.d/syslog-ng script.

I've run myself into the same problem...

Code:
root@host / # rc-update -s

           alsasound | boot
             apache2 |      default
                apmd |
               aumix |
            bootmisc | boot
          bootsplash |      default
             checkfs | boot
           checkroot | boot
               clock | boot
         consolefont | boot
         crypto-loop |
               cupsd |
          domainname |      default
              esound |
                famd |
                 gpm |
              hdparm |
            hostname | boot
                ircd |
             keymaps | boot
               local |      default nonetwork
          localmount | boot
             metalog |      default
             modules | boot
               mysql |      default
            net.eth0 |      default
              net.lo | boot
            netmount |      default
                 nfs |      default
            nfsmount |      default
                nscd |
          ntp-client |      default
                ntpd |
             numlock |
             portmap |
           pure-ftpd |
           rmnologin | boot
              rsyncd |
               samba |      default
              serial | boot
                sshd |      default
           syslog-ng |
             urandom | boot
          vixie-cron |      default
             winbind |
                 xdm |      default
                 xfs |      default
              xinetd |

but when I do
Code:
root@host / # rc-update del syslog-ng

... I get
Code:
syslog-ng not found in any of the specified runlevels.

There are many services I unmerged a long time, so I would like to clean this.
But everytime I try to remove one I get the error I mentioned already. :(

Delete the service's file in /etc/init.d/ and the redundant line should go away.
