Try emerging some fonts:

Code:
emerge corefonts mediafonts

I'm having trouble with the shading option, if I use it all I get is a black background.

My ~/.Xdefaults file:

Aterm*transpscrollbar: true
#Aterm*scrollBar: true
Aterm*transparent: true
Aterm*background: black
Aterm*foreground: white
Aterm*shading: 60
Aterm*fading: 55
Aterm*loginShell: true
Aterm*saveLines: 10000
#Aterm*font: -artwiz-smoothansi-*-*-*-*-13-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

I tried commenting out the Aterm*background: black line but it didn't help.

Anyone know what's going on here?

this may be due to the tool you use to set your background, not all of those support pseudo-transparency.
i recommend using feh, works just fine.

OK, taking that on board.......

I use the fluxcarnation theme and set it up like this:

extract the tar.bz2 file
copy the style file to ~/.fluxbox/styles
copy the background file to ~/.fluxbox/backgrounds (I had to edit the path to the background file in the style file to change it from .blackbox to .fluxbox)
then simply selected the theme in the fluxboxmenu/user styles - this set the background for me, so how should I go about correcting the method use to set the background?

fluxbox (and its themes) use fbsetbg to set wallpapers. this is a wrapper to various programs to set the background. to find out what you are using, try "fbsetbg -i".
i recommend you emerge feh (it's also a pretty cool lightweight imageviewer), and do "fbsetbg -u feh ~/path/to/wallpaper.jpg" once, that should be enough to make fbsetbg remeber to use feh. see if transparency works then.
