Heh, I'd like to see them try and send us all to Iraq.
There isn't really a need for this. The US has about 1.5 million active duty military personel right now. |

There's no way in hell there'll be another draft.
For starters, the current military would fight this tooth and nail, since it would DRASTICALLY reduce the quality of our armed forces. Not everyone's cut out for the military lifestyle, and trying to force everyone into it would be a complete disaster.
It'd also increase the current military budget by a huge degree in order to provide, support, shelter, food, etc. to the draftees and their families. And with Bush's "Spend and Spend" policies, this would cause MAJOR problems.
Sorry, but it ain't gonna happen. Thank $DEITY. _________________ Wanna get hold of me? PM's the best way. |

there are 2 different versions of these bills, one for ages 18-26, and one for aged 18-49....

Quote: | There is pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills: S 89 and HR 163) which will time the program's initiation so the draft can begin at early as Spring 2005 -- just after the 2004 presidential election. The administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed now, while the public's attention is on the elections, so our action on this is needed immediately. |

Xerroz, the type of program they're talking about enacting would be around for a long time. It's similar to programs they have in other countries. |

There's always the educational deferment. Lets just see how many PhDs I can get. |

pizen, read the article. It specifically says that they're trying their best to make college and Canada no longer options. |

I would prefer that if there is a Draft that there be NO deferment. All are called or none are called. _________________ [Owner/Operator: Dhampir Dreams]

There will always be deferments. Medical, hardship, and such. |

Some deferments are inevitable. It is very irresponsible to send someone into combat if they, lets say, have perforated ear drums (common with people who had tubes as children). A nearby explosion could easily result in deafness, thus a worthless soldier.
As far as the draft, I don't think it will ever be used. But if it is, and if I were young enough, I would enlist just as my father, grandfather, and great grandfather did when their country called on them. |

Ok, I admit that I didn't read the article. Now I have. The idea of removing undergrads from school to fight is quite frightening. And for the Canada thing...well, my fiance would rather we move to a spanish-speaking country so we'd probably head south rather than north (I'm kidding...I think) |

Cause you are underage? You do realize one day you will be of age, and this war we are in isnt gonna be over anytime soon. If I was you, I would do all in my power to prevent a draft. Read the bills going before congress and try to educate people on them. Whining gets us nowhere, activism changes things. |

If anything, undergrads would be the first on the Transports out if I had my way.
Medical is a given.
And I would rewrite all our extradition treaties to state that draft dodgers were to be immediatly returned for trial in the US. _________________ [Owner/Operator: Dhampir Dreams]

Like Canada would obey our laws that force extradition. Look at em up there, cleaning 24/7. Eating Eggs Benedict. Watching curling. They think they are so better than us.......

I guess that's why you're not in charge. How do you feel about the conscientious objector deferment? |

The difference being that you don't kill people in a civillian job (normally), and that nobody randomly draws your name from a hat making you do that job. The draft is a flawed concept. If a country cannot muster up enough support voluntarily to fight a war, then there is either not a good enough reason for the war, or the country doesn't deserve to exist much longer. |
