I have this same printer and got it working using cups, ghostscript and the gimp-print-cups drivers. Best of all, cups has good how-to:
http://www.cups.org/sam.html
I highly recommend using the web interface to configure cups. Once you start cups:
Code: | /etc/init.d/cupsd start |
open up a browser and go to:
Code: | http://localhost:631/admin |
From there it's pretty straight forward. |

That's funny, I thought that's what I did with the link But seriously, that's the documentations I followed for setting up. Installing cups,gimp-print-cups,and ghostscript did it for me.
I guess it's time for the usual questions:
-Do you have parallel port support compiled in kernel/loaded as modules?
-What error are do you have in your /var/log/cups/error_log files? |

Ok well in the drivers there are 10 listings of the default canon s450 stuff. and the other 2 that i added were from linux printing and the people in the gentoo chat told me to try that.
