|

Hi folks,
Having problems installing Grub -- I followed the installation doc right up to where I have to "setup (hd0)", and after I try that command at the Grub prompt, I get the following error message:
-------8< start error----------------
Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists.......no
Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists.......no
Error 15: File Not Found
-------8< end error----------------
Now this doesn't make sense to me, as I've checked those locations it mentions, and the file 'stage1' DOES NOT exist!
Partition Info:
sda1 (boot) - ext3
sda2 - swap
sda3 - reiserFS
I ended up exiting the chroot'd shell, and copying the contents of /boot into /mnt/gentoo/boot, and the Grub process worked......
Why was /mnt/gentoo/boot not correctly populated?
(would just like to know what's going on!)
TIA |

If you made your directories as per the install instructions it should have worked.
You've got to make and mount /mnt/gentoo followed by /mnt/gentoo/boot etc.... _________________ Windows = a 32 bit extension to a 16 bit GUI on an 8 bit OS written for a 4 bit architecture by a 2 bit company who can't stand 1 bit of competition. |

I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I was installing off the most current UT2003 CD and tried doing it three times. Eventually I decided to download the regular live install CD (the one with Armegatron or whatever it's called on it) and didn't have this problem anymore. Try that. I think it'll solve your problem. |

Thanks for that.
I managed to get the system up and running ok because grub was looking for some files in /mnt/gentoo/boot/grub so I just copied the whole grub folder from the installation CD into /mnt/gentoo/boot and that allowed me to finish off the grub install....
...and here I am posting my reply on my new Gentoo system!
I'm just assuming that I missed a step in the install process! |
