Saw the latest wesnoth-0.7.7 is out so I emerged it. The editor works fine but the game won't start. It prints
Code:
started game: 3189687240
starting play_game
Initialized true type fonts
and then just hangs. Wesnoth-0.7.6 worked just fine so I tried going back to that version but the same thing happens. Hmm, must be something else.

Things I tried:
reverting to really simple c-flags (no help),
removing ~/.wesnoth and trying to run (nothing, no new ~/.wesnoth created).

I'm stuck. I don't even know where to start looking for the problem. Any ideas? It was working 3 weeks ago so it's something I did fairly recently.

[P.S. The only other problem I've seen on my system is that ufed stopped working and started throwing errors. Could they be related?]

[EDIT: It's a sound problem. It starts if something else is using the sound card. Maybe ALSA problems with a new kernel?]

It's a problem with sdl-mixer-1.2.5-r2. Downgrade to 1.2.5-r1 and you should be fine.

Thank you immensely! That fixed it.

Now how the hell did you know it was that? :?

Because I noticed that any SDL program with sound stopped working after I did my last update, which included the new version of sdl-mixer. From there it was fairly easy to determine that that was the culprit.
