Hi folks... I got bit by Gnome 2.6... Can anyone help me get things nice again?
1. Just out of curiosity, I wanted to see what's going on with gnome....
Code: |
# emerge -pvD gnome
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] gnome-base/gnome-2.6 -accessibility +cdr -doc -dvdr [empty/missing/bad digest]
Total size of downloads: 0 kB
|
Any idea what's with the empty digest? Is this because it's a "meta package" (whatever that is), or is there an error?
Similarly, in doing a search for gnome ebuilds, I find the following installed and not installed...
Code: |
* gnome-base/gnome
Latest version available: 2.6
Latest version installed: 2.6
Size of downloaded files: 0 kB
Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/
Description: Meta package for the GNOME desktop.
License: as-is
* gnome-base/gnome-applets
Latest version available: 2.6.0-r1
Latest version installed: 2.6.0-r1
Size of downloaded files: 4,534 kB
Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/
Description: Applets for the Gnome2 Desktop and Panel
License: GPL-2 FDL-1.1
* gnome-base/gnome-common
Latest version available: 2.4.0
Latest version installed: 2.4.0
Size of downloaded files: 160 kB
Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/
Description: Common files for development of Gnome packages
License: GPL-2
* gnome-base/gnome-core
Latest version available: 1.4.2-r1
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of downloaded files: 6,129 kB
Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/
Description: Core components of the GNOME desktop environment
License: GPL-2
* gnome-base/gnome-desktop
Latest version available: 2.6.0.1
Latest version installed: 2.6.0.1
Size of downloaded files: 1,052 kB
Homepage: http://www.gnome.org/
Description: Libraries for the gnome desktop that is not part of the UI
License: GPL-2 FDL-1.1 LGPL-2
|
Note that's just a subset. But why is gnome-core not installed? Obviously, gnome is at least partially installed and running, as that's what I'm using.
Finally, if I see what it would take to install gnome-core (do I even need it?), I get the following blocks:
Code: |
# emerge -pvD gnome-core
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[blocks B ] gnome-base/gnome-session (from pkg gnome-base/gnome-core-1.4.2-r1)
[blocks B ] x11-terms/gnome-terminal (from pkg gnome-base/gnome-core-1.4.2-r1)
[blocks B ] gnome-base/gnome-desktop (from pkg gnome-base/gnome-core-1.4.2-r1)
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gnome-core-1.4.2-r1 +cups +kde +nls 0 kB
Total size of downloads: 0 kB
|
I'm confused... can anyone explain what, if anything, I'm missing.
2. On a related note: when using nautilus to see my system, the "System Settings" folder is empty. Is there some other package I need to emerge? I thought I saw something to that effect in another posting, but after 2 horus of searching, I can't pull that up again.
Thanks for any help or pointers anyone can give me!

Since you already have most of gnome installed, try doing:
and that should go through and bring all of your Gnome components and their dependencies up to date.
or, if you want to just start over with gnome and make sure you're totally up to date, I suppose you could do:
Code: | emerge sync
emerge unmerge -C gnome
emerge depclean
revdep-rebuild
emerge gnome |
As for the gnome-core question, the gnome version associated with that is version 1.4.2 and the current Gnome is 2.6.x. I'm not sure why it's still around -probably for compatibility considerations with older GTK 1/Gnome 1 software- but you don't need it for Gnome 2.
Oh, and I get the same thing when 'emerge -pv gnome' with regards to the missing/bad digest. I think that it probably is because gnome is a 'metaport' which only exists to pull in all the ports pertaining to a complete gnome installation. |
