Ever since I upgraded to kernel 2.6.x, my computer freezes when there's a lot of disk IO going on. When I have DMA enabled and xfer mode is udma5, I get a hard lock and I need to power off the machine. Just for kicks, I disabled DMA and I got the same errors without the hard locks. Here's my log output:

Quote:

I then did the following:

Quote:

root # hdparm -d1 -X udma4 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
setting xfermode to 68 (UltraDMA mode4)
using_dma = 1 (on)
root # hdparm -i /dev/hda

/dev/hda:

UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 *udma4 udma5
AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: device does not report version:

* signifies the current active mode

And I still got the same error messages in the logs, but my system didn't crash as it does with udma5. Does anyone have any idea which kernel option is causing these IO problems?

Unless you tell us the exact model of your ATA controller and what IDE ATA driver you used in the kernel, there's small chance of help... See lspci -v for info on the controller.

I finally figured out that it's a partition table problem. cfdisk gives me:

Quote:

FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partition ends after end-of-disk
Press any key to exit cfdisk

I am experiencing exactly the same problem including the cfdisk failure message.

Can anyone tell me, what this is about and what I could do to fix this problem?
