Hi

I've been using gentoo for about 2-3 months now, and its been performing very well. Yesterday I bought a new motherboard and memory, and ever since installing these i've had severe system freezes during use (not imediatly, but perhaps 10-30 minutes into use).

My current hardware is:
Athlon XP 1800+
ASUS A7V600-X Mobo
512MB DDR400
Sparkle GeForce FX 5200 (cheap,cheap)
WD 120GB (Gentoo Drive)
WD 40GB (Old XP for times like this :P)
Aureal Vortex 2 Sound Card (I would use onboard sound, but its not supported from what i've found)
LiteOn 52x32x52 CD-RW
Pioneer DVD-ROM
Intel Pro 10/100 NIC

After both freezes i've booted back up and done a cat of /var/log/messages, the last time it crashed i beleive this was related to these lines:

Code:

Jun 30 22:18:49 alucard 0: NVRM: AGPGART: unable to retrieve symbol table
Jun 30 22:18:50 alucard atkbd.c: Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program, like XFree86, might be trying access hardware directly.
Jun 30 22:18:50 alucard atkbd.c: Spurious ACK on isa0060/serio0. Some program, like XFree86, might be trying access hardware directly.

Note: at the time i was running XCDRoast, XMMS, Gaim and Gnome (+ misc stuff)

also i've seen this pop up a bit within messages

Code:

vortex: IRQ fifo error

I've compiled support for the vortex into the kernel, and it works fine (mixes everything aswell). I couldn't, however, find support for either of my chipsets on the mobo (KT600 and VT8237).. im not sure how much of an issue this is, but i compiled in the VIA 82CXXX Chipset support (that seemed to make the HDD run with DMA enabled).

I've tried plain 2.6.6, 2.6.7 and gentoo-dev-sources kernels, they all seem to cause the same issues.

Any Ideas? Need Any Info? let me know ^_^
Cheers!
- James

My old hardware was:

Epox 8KTA3L+ Mobo
320MB SD-RAM
Onboard Sound (VIA 82C686B Southbridge)
minus Vortex 2

I'd suggest setting your agp speed to 2x or 4x, turning off sidebanding and agp control in the BIOS.

I know Vortex as high speed RAID-HW, but it sounds like you mean an audio-card.

Move this card into an different motherboard-slot. Is it the RAID-Controller, then move it next to the AGP-slot.
Is it a sound card, move it into the 2 outer side slots.
If the posting from loxety didn't help, will it be possible that you have an IRQ conflict.

Did Intel produce at any time bugfree HW?
