while I don't like KDE (really don't like any desktop environment) BUT zombie seems to be using fluxbox (my favorite WM, btw), almost as root, my vote goes to him

Good move on going to Reiser - very speedy fs in my experience. I was able to inadvertantly delete more than 5 years of e-mail (800+ megs) in less than half a second using Reiser on my box. :)

this is a cool read

unfortunately, all my friends are computer illiterate and view me condescendingly as the friend with the silicon affliction, you know, the usual tokenism :( ...until their HORDC running windows 98/me irritates them more than the neighbor's poodle  )

they have pcs (I'm being charitable  ) but no one is even aware of linux - even at work, I think my fondness for linux means that my every keystroke is monitored :x

I envy these 2 guys and their online competition, so please keep the updates coming so that I can derive some vicarious pleasure :D

We aim to please ;)

In the past 3 days I've installed, configured and tested several small things that mainly have to do with the desktop environment and the overall ease of use. I really want to make sure nothing of what's included feels complicated or starts crashing. I've considered downgrading to KDE 3.0.3 for that reason, because a lot of (very cool) multimedia capabilities are still too unstable for real life use. We also discussed the use of The Gimp vs. photoshop 7 and, although the gimp still is a impressive tool by my own standards, my girlfriend is convinced she could not switch from photoshop to gimp for the work she is actually doing. So I will definitely be using VMWare with winXP. I don't think there's anything else that will need vmware though.

I've tested gnome 2 and the basic configuration sucks so bad I immediately unemerged it. No anti-aliasing by default, and a window manager switcher that couldn't be found anywhere, add that to metacity's default theme... man, I am sooo sticking to KDE.

Samba is fully functionnal with VMWare and the other machines in the workgroup, but I still haven't found how to browse other machines with KDE LAN browsing, got some reading to do I guess. Browsing my own machine works though. Woo. Hoo. Am I a l33t H4X0R or what. (and it took me like 2 days before I figure out I had to add LISa to the default runlevel...)

There are three little things that bug me these days and even wake me up at night (one of which I am NOT telling you), questions you guys might be able to answer. Is it bad to compile components with different flags, ex.: compiling KDE with -march pentium4 -mcpu pentium4 but adding kdeaddons with -mcpu i686 because if I don't do that the emerge doesn't work? And also, are there altenatives to using the crossover plugin to play quicktime files? Thanx in advance if you can help me :)

I'm going back to emerging stuff now, updating tomorrow

My God, I never knew this little guy would become even just a little bit popular some day.

He's one of the characters I had created for an underground cartoon that never went anywhere, his name's Dwight, and he's pissed. ;) Funny how little things like that start getting attention years after they are dead.

Hey I just thought, I did not post any screenshots... gonna work on that today.

But coffee first...

You can find a screenshot of what my deskotp looks like these days. Not too sure about the color scheme but the rest seems clean and convivial enough. What do you guys think?

Don't worry, I don't get it either... that tells us a lot about why people elect a particular politician. heh.

At first people were voting for vo.wick3d because he's got a desktop and I got a laptop, then I got votes for using fluxbox for the root account, then my "cool avatar factor" kicked in.

So people, from now on, please vote for me because I use XFS or something ;)

Seriously, I'm almost done building a list of the apps I'll be using, what'll be included in KDE, etc. That should inject a bit of... technologicalliness?... technilicagilicaniillness, ah whatever, into the discussion.

I vote for gwar!

Seriously though, when this contest is over the winner should create a crazy ebuild to turn any gentoo system into this "Not almost there anymore" linux.

If she stays with you through that, you had probably better marry her. ;)

the horror...

I wrote my first major university C language assignment on a Redhat 5 box... and I didn't even have twm - everytime I started X, it crashed the box. :-P

The box later went on to become a Plan9 install... and then a melted heap of slag after a hardware failure. :-P

As I said earlier, you ought to fear and respect (and also vote for) Gwar.

Because they've got plastic suits with fake muscles and spikes and sharp teeth. Raawwrrr...

This does seem to be a pretty bad copy-cat technique. At least use blackbox or something to try and get some kind of debate going. ;)

I think this thread would have a lot more color if we could hear from the GFs. Any chance of persuading them to join the party?
