Are there any video editors availible comparable to Avid or Final Cut?

Not really. Let me qualify that. There's:
Cinelerra: Really quite powerful and cool. If you can get it to work. And not crash. Has limited support for video formats. Probably most flexible of the lot. Let's just leave it at: has its problems. Open Source.
MainActor: Latest version has only come out for linux in demo version. There is an older full linux version, but it's not great. Not sure if you can buy it anymore. Demo version is very limited. Commercial.
Kino: Really just a toy. But a useful toy. It looks like it aims to be like the sort of OEM app you get bundled when you buy a dv camera. Just drag & drop scenes and chnge their order mainly. Not very powerful. Not finished. Open Source.
Kdenlive: Not finished. You might or might not be able to get it to compile. Not finished. Kde app. Not finished. Open Source, but not finished.
Can anyone else think of more? |

Avidemux2: Similar to VirtualDub. Supports most AVI formats including Motion-JPEG. Open source and pretty stable IMO. Linear-editing only, so it's only best for just straight conversion with a few filters. (Just like VirutalDub.)

Wow, thanks! I'm going to check out aidemux2 now. I found virtualdub not running very fast under WINE.  There are some things I miss about windows, and a lot of other things I can go without.  |

how well (or badly) does AVID work under wine? if its too bad will have to do the (argh) dual boot thingie and install windows again...

I would recommend Cinelerra-CVS. It's an unofficial version of Cinelerra with a bunch a patches added to it. It has more features, functionality, and is actually more stable (in my experience) than the regular Cinelerra.

The big advantage of cinelerra over Final Cut / Avid is that it's always rendering in the background while you work, and can even use a render farm. It basicly uses any free cpu time to render what you are editing without interferring so that when you want to view what you've done, you don't have to sit there and wait for several minutes for your edits to render or depend on lower quality real time rendering.
