I have a machine here with a Sata Hard Drive, and I have a 2004.1 minimal boot CD. I *cannot* get the drives to detect. Is there something I have to modprobe here or what?

Did you try the smp kernel (2.6). Give smp as bootoption. It should detect it as /dev/sd*
