xauth: timeout in locking authority file

I setup a user (other than root) using the following:

useradd user
passwd user

What else do I need to do to get X to work for this user?

EDIT: BTW, I tried "chmod 1777 /tmp" as root and this didn't seem to help.

EDIT: Changed title from "Users" to better reflect the problem.

Hum: give some info to help you out...

Do you get any errors when you type startx as your user ?

What wm you will use ?

does your X works as root ???

look in /var/log there is a file called XFree somehting look at it it should give you what failed when you try to start X.

Did you use the -m option with useradd to create home directories?

The specific error I get is "xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/ivanhoe/.Xauthority". Then X starts and I get a message box with "Could not open or create the file '/home/user/gconf-test-locking-file'; this indicates that there may be a problem with your configuration, as many programs will need to create files in your home directory. The error was 'Permission denied' (errno = 13).

As per the FAQ, I used "usermod -G users,wheel username". I suspect that this user doesn't have enough permission, but being a total Linux n00b I don't know what groups to set for this user.

BTW, I have Gnome installed and it works fine as root.

Okay, I figured it out. The file permissions for the user's home folder weren't set right.
