|
|
Every so often (it seems random), my system temporarily freezes. I cannot type or move my cursor. Applications, like top for instance, fail to update. The freezing time seems random... but has not been more than 10 seconds to my knowledge. Sometimes the time between freezes is a few minutes, and sometimes it is a few seconds.
It even happens in console mode. I'm not sure what the problem is. Does anyone else have/had this problem? Is it common?
I have a p4-3.0ghz, 1.0 gig of RAM, 120GB ide hdd, 80gb sata hdd.
ati radeon 9200
kernel-2.4.25-gentoo with smp, intel sata, vga framebuffer support
gcc 3.3.2 20031218
sorry for the lack of info, but I'm not quite sure where to start or what to do.
Thanks for whatever help you guys can provide,
Tony G.

It seems we have a similar problem... I have the same kernel and OS running on a Athlon XP 2500+ and it freezes randomly just as you describe it.... even in console mode, even when loading!!! Can't move mouse, can't hit Ctr+Alt+Backspace || Delete... Nothing...
But I've noticed something though: the temperature of my Hdd is higher when I start gentoo (and I mean you can bake eggs on it). I also have Win XP and never freezes... (hdd not so hot).
I'll try to buy ca case cooler AND a Hdd one.... It doesn't make much sense though, but maybe it is something related to the ReiserFS or something? _________________ Viata-i grea, dar trece... |

I just checked...
my hard disk is very cool.
Right now I am ripping a DVD, and the freezing happens every 10-50 seconds, and lasts between 2 and 20 seconds it seems.
This is much more frequent than when the system is idle. It is also VERY annoying.
Yeah, I'm using reiserfs as well (3.6?)
My hdd is a Samsung SpinPoint SP1203N. (Work got it for me. I had no choice) It doesn't make any noise, so it doesn't sound bad, but it is a samsung....
anyway. I will see if I can try out another hard disk, and get back to you.
Any ideas you guys have would be appreciated.
Thx,
Tony G. |

It seems we have different problems (I missed the word temporary in the thread name). When my system freezes it freezes for good. I have do to a hardware reboot to get it back online... And I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the overheating of the hdd (Maxtor by the way)... Have you checked the other tens of freezing problems on this forum? Maybe something would be helpful to you. I had no luck... _________________ Viata-i grea, dar trece...

Ops I thought I was in the Dutch forum.. ahum
I asked which motherboard you had, because I experience freezing with acpi enabled on a asus-a7n8x-deluxe |

I kind of understood you anyway... and already answered your question: Abit NF7. But I REALLY don't tking that has anything to do with it... I'm using a hdd cooler right now and the problem seems to have diminished, meaning that I had no freezings lately.. although the chip on my hdd is still too hot to touch... even in Windows... _________________ Viata-i grea, dar trece... |

I have an asus p4p800.
P4-3.0Ghz,
1024Mb 400Mhz RAM
I found that when the freeze happens, my hard-disk light stops flashing (if it was flashing before)
For this reason, I don't believe the hard drive is the source of the problem.
I also have an ATI-radeon 9200. But my console uses vga framebuffer. X uses fglrx from ati-drivers
Still miffed about this one.
Although, I think I will try turning off the "smart cpu fan control" or whatever it is called. My fan used to sound like an airplane, but then I turned it on in the BIOS. I don't remember if the freezing started after that. But we'll see...

Freesing problem like this may be due to kernel power managent in kernel, Try to rebuild your kernel without acpi (or apm), you may also disable apic. See if the problem goes away. |

Here is what I have:
[*] Power Management support
< > Advanced Power Management BIOS support
ACPI Support --->
[*] ACPI Support
< > AC Adapter
< > Battery
< > Button
< > Fan
< > Processor
< > ASUS Laptop Extras
< > Toshiba Laptop Extras
[ ] Debug Statements
[ ] Relaxed AML Checking
The fan control I am referring to is a bios option, not in the OS.
Does this raise any flags with anyone?
I will make the changes when I reboot next, but in the mean time, I figured I would ask in case anyone knows this to be a problem or something. |

this seems something i am experiencing....
the system runs ok for a while (average 2 days), but after that
suddenly freezes (for good)
nothing to be found with consideration to error messages, very annoying..
my disks are also a maxtor and 2 quantum's, but they don't get very hot..
for the rest its a amd athlon xp machine..
has run ok for over a year now in this config, so i'm not sure where to look (2.6.6 kernel, but its run ok with all 2.6 versions so far,
went back to 2.6.5 and same problem, and i'm sure it ran ok with
that version for a long while so its not the kernel) |

Solved this in not such an elegant way... in BIOS i deselected cpu halt option... red somewhere this is a problem in nvidia chipsets... too fast halt/reconnect cycles cause kernel freeze.
Never had a problem since.
But in my case the freezing was not so temporary... so I suppose this is a whole different problem. _________________ Viata-i grea, dar trece... |

It seems to have been some sort of motherboard issue that for some reason was made worse with my kernel options or something.
I switched to ubuntu and the problem went away for a while, then came back. Slowly the problem occurred more frequently for longer durations until I finally got fed up and called the computer technition here at work. He tried some of the usual B.S. such as switching the RAM, but eventually he replaced the motherboard and everything has worked fine since then.
I'm still on ubuntu here at work but don't worry, I still have gentoo on two laptops and three desktops at home.
thanks a bunch for the input, guys |
