I have stale login entries in the output of the "who" command:
Code: | seba :3 May 29 17:18
seba pts/0 May 29 17:18 (:3.0)
seba pts/1 May 29 17:18 (:3.0)
seba pts/3 May 29 17:21 (:3.0)
seba pts/4 May 29 17:22 (:3.0)
seba pts/5 May 29 17:23 (:3.0)
seba pts/9 May 29 17:28 (:3.0)
seba pts/11 May 29 17:28 (:3.0)
seba pts/13 May 29 17:28 (:3.0)
seba pts/15 May 29 17:46
seba pts/15 May 29 17:46 (:3.0)
...

If I open an xterm or xfterm4 and close it, a new pts appears in this list and never goes away. On the other hand, ssh and text console logins (Alt-F1 and friends) behave correctly.
I tried re-emerging xfce4 but nothing changes. Any advice? I am using gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.5.
Edit: 1-Added "solved"; 2-Added "not quite"; 3-Changed "not quite" to "not"; 4-Fixed typo---damn!

Thank you both. Kernel 2.6.6 didn't solve the problem, but sapphirecat's link did the trick. (I did search before posting, I swear! )
I changed the permissions and that was it.
Edit: The closed xterms now delete their utmp entries properly, but the pts are not released. I'll explain this later in the other thread (sapphirecat's link)... |
