Don't know how good it is, but I've used it to check that my firewall was blocking something atleast.

Just make sure you do it from a machine on the other side of your firewall, i.e. the internet.

nmap and nessus are very good for testing servers/firewalls, but you'll need to run them from outside your house of course. Helps if you have a friend who uses 'nix.

I find nessus the best. I use it from home to scan a bunch on networks I look after - after taking down VPN's etc. As the other posters say, you need access to a unix box outside the network you are trying to test
