Now that I have everything (mostly) working I'd like to set the run level so Linux starts in X. Can anyone direct me to some information on how to do this in Gentoo?

Thanks in advance.

Is using xdm sufficient? Add xdm to the default runlevel with
Code:
# rc-update add xdm default
and optionally specify a session in /etc/rc.conf.

Just change DISPLAYMANAGER to gdm in /etc/rc.conf.
