|

If I recall, Gentoo is meta-distro, which I thought meant that it provides tools to build your own distros but to date, I´ve not heard of anything of the sort. Am I not just blind, am I not checking the right places. I check slashdot frequently, but there is no mention there.
Just wondering, why no one has yet attempted to come up with say, a simpler distro that might be perhaps, based on the gentoo snapshots. |

Gentoo is a meta distro in the sence that it dosen't come with a bunch of compiled packages. You download and compile them yourself. I'm sure you could make snapshots, but they would then be just that; snapshots, and not distros. _________________ PKA Cuber

Or rather, you could make a snapshot and distribute it, but it would slightly defeat the object of Gentoo.
If you wanted to distribute it, you'd have to compile stuff for i386 or i686 or whatever, and then distribute those compiled packages.
To really get the most out of Gentoo, you have to compile from source, and it would be quite a task to distribute the source for all the stuff in portage I'm talking lots of DVDs worth of source. I guess you could pick and choose the most commonly used apps, like they do with real distros, but even then it would still be a lot of source. _________________ My blog

I think sharklinux was ripped from gentoo...not sure if it still exists though. _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

Zynot has been around for a while, but I've yet to see them actually _produce_ anything. |

I wouldn't really call zynot gentoo based in the sense that I think Burgin meant. Zynot is a fork of gentoo that has no continuing relationship with gentoo. |
