when i try and run

# /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config

after it asks for the device name for the mouse it says illegal instruction no matter what

Do you have xf86cfg on your system? It is usually easier to use.
You could also try to run:
Code:
X -configure && startx -- -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new


Thats the help I can give you. I dont know whats causing the error you get, maybe google can tell you.

no xf86cfg and the other one did the same illegel instruction
i think i can do it manually though

I think the version of xfree86 you have may be b0rked. You could try another version.

when i originally tryed to do emerge xfree everything went fine but it had an error with the file "savage-*-*.zip" or something like that
in order to get it to not have any errors i ran it with --usepkg

Ok. I dont know anything about that.

Because xfree86 is not officially supported anymore because of licensing concerns you could try xorg-x11 which is used in the exact same way as xfree.

edit: that is the newer versions. The "old" versions are still supported.
