Yep, its me again. Lets see if we can go two for two.
Special thanks to georwell for teaching me the ways of moving files effortlessly. Now to the ugly stuff. (I figure I'd make it a different thread in the rare event that this is a major issue a lot of other newbies need to deal with.)
As I stated in my last post, I'm trying to encode AAC to OGG, for use on my mp3 player. Mencoder can supposedly do this - but it keeps telling me a video file is mandatory for any of it to happen. Of course, I have no idea how I should be going about it, but
Code: | mencoder foo.m4a foo.ogg |
gives me
Code: | MEncoder 1.0pre4-3.3.3 (C) 2000-2004 MPlayer Team

I've looked everywhere, and no site or past post has given me a clear cut way of encoding just audio. Should I be using something else (transcode perhaps) ?
As always, thanks for making my life easier. _________________ If at first you don't succeed, complain to the nearest linux guru. |

Mencoder really is meant for video. Using it for audio only really overcomplicates it for yourself.
The simplest way of doing it is using faad* to convert it into a wav and then oggenc to turn that wav into an ogg.
* - I don't know much about AAC, I just guess this is what to use.
ps- Converting a file from one lossy audio codec to another is not a recommended operation. You will lose a lot of quality. |

I got dBPowerAmp working in wine, and it runs near-flawlessly (just a speed decrease on the file selection prompt). It works pretty fast for the amount of work I'm giving it. Thanks though; I'll play around with those tools and see if I can up my time.
I know the reencoding will drop generations in the audio, but for my intentive purposes, it won't really matter. dBPA has already gone through about half my music, and it sounds almost as good as it did before. On an mp3 player, it'll be even less noticible (thanks to the lovely headphones that come with the Neuros ). _________________ If at first you don't succeed, complain to the nearest linux guru. |
