I'm A newbie so I don't know that much but I have this problem with emerge.
I'm trying to do a GPR install of the live CD for Gentoo 1.4 i86 disks
and I try to emerge a pre-built kernel like this:
cdimage / # emerge -k sys-kernel/vanilla-sources
and end up with this:

Calculating depenencies ...done!

>>>emerge (1 of 1) sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.4.21 to /

>>>Downloading http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/distfiles/linux-2.4.21.tar.bz2

>>>Downloading http://disto.ibilio.org

/* it keeps on doing this trying all the sites it has till it runs out of sites to try and gives me this:*/

!!! Couldn't download linux-2.4.21.tar.bz2 . Aborting

cdimage / #

It can't download it because the computer dosn't even have a modem in it :x so help would be pretty cool.

I would be happy to assist... since a linux kernel requires configuration for each different system if your to net the best results and the kernelversion your attempting to use is allmost three years old i would recommend not using emerge -k for kernel sources... emerge gentoo-dev-sources will reward you with a 2.6.5 linux kernel source tree installed to /usr/src . Emerging hotplug will reward you with a suite of utilities such as pciutils "lspci" which will print a list of the contents and chipsets on your psi bus. Information critical for properly configuring a linux kernel for your hardware. If hand configuriing a linux kernel is not something your comfortable with i could assist you if a base config would be helpful.

Regards, ali3nx

Code:
emerge ="vanilla-sources-2.4.24"

If that doesn't work, you might have 2.4.25 and not 2.4.24.
Code:
emerge ="vanilla-sources-2.4.25"

The 2004.1 cd has vanilla-sources-2.4.25. The 1.4 cd has vanilla-sources-2.4.21 I think. So try:
# emerge =sys-kernel/vanilla-sources-2.4.21

OK have not replied for a while due to technical difficulties with the windows computer I have to use to access the net. but I have downloaded off the LiveCD all the distfiles and packages so there is no problem there I have tried the alternate methods off emerging that deadaim provided and that has not worked the method of emerging that I am using is the one that I got off the CD's install instructions which I access by typing:
cdimage /# links /mnt/cdrom/install.html
but that doesn't work even though they are current for the CD that I am using but not the most recent. I will try going:
cdimage /# emerge gentoo-dev-sources
as ali3nx suggested but I think it is somthing to do with the way I'm using emerge as I had this problem before but I had a friend help me get past it but had trouble later on and so tried starting again and I couldn't get it to work again. The method I used then was to go into the packages folder
and emerge the package directly from there but I think I did something different as it produces the same results as with the other way.
