|
|
I'm attempting a stage1 networkless install with a Universal LiveCD, and up until now, things have gone pretty smoothly...
I've configured and mounted my partitions, moved the pre-fab stage tarball, portage snapshot, and source to same, set up compilation variables, and, in short, done everything as prescribed in the Gentoo Handbook up until the bootstrapping section. But when I run bootstrap.sh (availible in /usr/portage/scripts) to move from stage1 to stage2, the script starts up and then attempts to connect to remote servers to download what I believe to be an updated portage snapshot. As this is a networkless install, the script chokes, unable to connect to the servers in question, and dumps me back at the prompt.
1) Although I have always believed that stage1 installs could be done using the Universal LiveCD exclusively, my experiences with the bootstrap script lead me to believe otherwise. Am I right or am I wrong?
2) Assuming I'm right about the stage1 install, what am I doing wrong; how should I adjust my settings/inputs to correct the script's results and move on to the next (damned) step?
If you need more information, please say so. I'll do my very best (as a Linux new-comer) to accommodate you.
Thanks for your assistance.

Normally it can't be done. You could always download all the needed files elsewhere, put them on a cd or something and take them back to the computer but that would be a really big job. |

you can't do a stage 1 install without network:
Quote: |
Stage1 Pros and Cons
+ Allows you to have total control over the optimization settings and optional build-time functionality that is initially enabled on your system
+ Suitable for powerusers that know what they are doing
+ Allows you to learn more about the inner workings of Gentoo
- Takes a long time to finish the installation
- If you don't intend to tweak the settings, it is probably a waste of time
- Not suitable for networkless installations

Or, well there is a possibility:

Thanks, people.
I checked out the networkless install option page that the second poster provided-suffice it to say that it'll be easier to just back-track and either work from an Internet connection (provided I can get the damned machine to interface properly) or attempt a different "stage". I had believed that Universal LiveCDs were designed to totally eliminate the need for a net connection; instead, they simply decrease install time and diminish dependency on the connection.
Next time I'll be more thorough in my research. 'Till then...10-4.
