I am trying to install a 3com 3c59x adapter, tried loading it in the kernel first as a module then as built in, but to no avail. It doesnt show up in dmesg.

accordiong to 3coms knowledge base this card is supported.
http://support.3com.com/infodeli/inotes/techtran/5a96_5ea.htm

You won't see the card listed in the dmesg startup log because it is a pcmcia card and won't be detected until pcmcia services are started.

Are you loading PCMCIA at boot?
Code:
rc-update add pcmcia boot

The card may be bad try using it from another OS (like the knoppix CD or the Gentoo LiveCD) and see if it is found. What kernel version are you using? Sometimes a driver will be broken from one release to the next. Check the documentation.

There is bug report about this driver but it doesn't seem to match your problem but does talk about a known bug with kernel 2.4.20 :

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49145

I'm assuming that the natsemi from your dmesg is the builtin ethernet? It will be eth0 and the pcmcia card will be eth1. Make sure you have it simlinked in /etc/init.d and add to your default (not boot) runlevel. Configure it in /etc/conf.d/net.
Code:

rc-update add net.eth1 default
