I have winmodem that works in my current system (redhat, kernel 2.4.20-8, hsflinmodem driver for this kernel only).
I untarred stage1 according manuals, now need to fetch packages. That means I need to install a proper kernel and this modem driver, but it requires a lot of packages... to fetch!!!
Can I establish a connection in my main system, but do emerge in base gentoo (chroot), that's how to let it know that a proper port (or what) is opened?
Or... what else?

Yes, if you open the connection in redhat, it should work for downloading packages. But downloading everything for a stage1 install on dial-up will take an amazingly long time 8O

You'll only need to get the kernel and hfslinmodem driver at the end of the install.

Thank you!
Yes, but the fact is chrooted gentoo doesn't see it as plain as you :)
Nope, it outputs that "temporary failure" instead :(

p.s. Well I'll put this long time download on cron, why shouldn'l let it work while I sleep or work
