When KDE startsup I get an error dialog box saying:
Code:
Sound server informational message:

Error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

The box in question uses and "old" SB16 (ISA)...is there something I ned to tweak?

Well, the standard thing you wanna check when this happens, is that you have drivers compiled into your kernel (or as modules). If you have them compiled as modules, make sure they are loaded.
You can check what modules are loaded with the command
Code:
lsmod

That's my initial thought anyway...

I used the Genkernel compiler, so I thought that they would be autoloaded...I'll check them out now...thanks,

I have this problem with several PCs (SB 16 pnp, C-Media 8738 and a laptop with ESS sound). The drivers appear to be loaded...they show up when using lsmod. The machines also use both a Genkernel (for a failsafe boot) and a custom complied one (Gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7 r8)...it happens whether I use hotplug or not.

Is there a sound how-to that I can use?
