i'm really bad at this manual crap so if i use genkernel will it effect anything (eg slow it down) |

Genkernel just sets several options in your kernel. Even those that you don't want/need.
I would recommend trying a manual configuration. Just start with a working kernel first. Once you have that, keep configuring it until you're content. |

What I did, and what a lot of other ppl do I think, is to use genkernel on the first install...Use gentoo for a little while (in my case about a week) and then compile your own kernel when you feel a little more comfortable...maybe after you've read some forum posts about it. If you go this route, even if you b0rk your new kernel somehow, you still have the old kernel to fall back on. Just make sure that when you copy your bzImage over, that you give it a unique name so you can differentiate it from genkernel, and include both in your grub.conf file so you have the option to revert back to the stable genkernel if the one you rolled starts acting shady. Then, when you're ready, you can delete the genkernel (or keep it, it doesnt take up that much space) _________________ Linux User 355087 |
