Hi,

I'm having an annoying problem with kopete.
It shows contacts as being offline though they are online.

But what is annoying me the most is, that this is happening with people using ICQ but it's working fine with people using MSN.

Ya, kopete is weird. I use the AIM protocol and it shows users offline also.
Then started testing further and got weirder. Here's why:

Have two aliases. Call them: Decibels2 and Decibels

Have done most of the testing with Decibels2 and contacts are offline. Today, started testing with Decibels. Was able to get contacts to work. It still doesn't download the contactlist. Have to manually enter, but it will show the contacts even after shut down. Just tested and still works.

The Decibels2 alias connects no problem. But if someone sends message and chose view, it will display the message and when try to reply, still say they are offline.

The only difference can think of is that first alias has number after it.

Just learned something useful for debugging. Talking to the kopete developers and said to install kopete like this:

Code:
USE="debug" FEATURES="nostrip" emerge kdenetwork

Trying it right now to help figure out why one account works and the other don't.

Cool. Thanks for your effort.

Did you try it and get any results?

Actually Yes. It spits all kinds of useful code know. Looks like Gaim with debug turned on.

The problem is so subtle that going to have to mess with it more tonight.

Ran both accounts. And the one that doesn't worked looked pretty much like the other. Except it said contacts already in there so ignoring and when answered message that was sent, got the same offline response and same useless stdout had when debug wasn't turned on: Something about Bad Window.

So, going to delete all the contacts, Run account into a file and do a diff on them to see what is up.

Hi, found at least a workaround to the problem. Apparently only the status of users that request authorization isn't shown correctly.

The workaround is described in http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61223

Quote:
when you have a new contact, close kopete (or go offline on ICQ) and go to go.icq.com, add the new contact to your list, or if already present, request authorization from him. you can then go back to kopete, and as soon as the user authorized you, he will appear online...

Just a workaround but it worked for me.

I'm not using icq though and can see that in the debug output. Saw that, but won't work for me. Couple of the developers are working on it with me, so might have it fixed soon. Getting real confusing what it is doing.

Looks like might have fixed the problem. Have logged out and back in, but haven't rebooted.
Pretty stupid what I did to 'fix' it, if it is fixed?!

I was using Gaim with toc.oscar.aol.com. So changed it to login.oscar.aol.com port 5190 like kopete. Then closed out and back in and bammmm, kopete finally loads the right list and works. Contacts shown online and can talk to them. Will reboot later and see if still works.

Well, later rebooted and Kopete is now still working. So if have this problem with Kopete. Install Gaim (even though ebuild says they hate Gentoo users) and use the same login connection as kopete. Upload your list and should work now with kopete. Then uninstall Gaim if want. 8)

Well, couple days latter and still working fine, Kopete that is. So it would appear that Kopete does not properly send the contactlist to the server. After changing Gaim to the same login address as Kopete, the correct list was sent.

Then Kopete does appear to retrieve the list correctly from server. I would bet if add a new contact to list that Kopete won't see it after restarting it. Don't have anymore contacts to add to test that out.

Did file a bug report with kopete developers though.

Use the same Server with Gaim that you use with Kopete.
ie
Code:
login.oscar.aol.com

Code:
5190

I was using the toc one with Gaim. When used the same server as Kopete/Gaim, then used Gaim, then closed and switched to Kopete, the contact list was correct.

So, yes. Add all your contacts to Gaim, use the same server, when you see Gaim is working with them, you can switch Kopete back on and it should work.

Guess your saying they still haven't fixed this booboo huh? Just got back, but looks like they just marked my bug on this as a duplicate of another and doesn't seem to be to me. But the above should work.

For everybody's info, I think I've fixed all the contact list related bugs, except for one, which I'll describe shortly.

Kopete uses the list that's stored on the AOL servers for your contact list. If the contact is not on the server-side list, then you probably won't receive status updates for it. I have some code to fix this, but it's not finished yet, although the final release of KDE 3.3 should work nicely.

All the above issues mentioned in this thread should be fixed, save for the one I just finished explaining. :-)
