Hello,
I have a Riva TNT2 video card and a Asus A7V. I'm new to gentoo and I having a lot or problems with my video card.
First, VGA cosone doesn't work. First I compiled with rivafb and used those setings:
kernel /boot/kernel-2.4.25-gentoo root=/dev/hda1 vga=791
kernel /boot/kernel-2.4.25-gentoo root=/dev/hda1 video=rivafb:1027x168
kernel /boot/kernel-2.4.25-gentoo root=/dev/hda1 vga=791 video=rivafb:1027x168
None worked. So I used vga=ask. Selected one resolution but, when the penguin logo appears at top of my screen, resolution is back at that old fashioned way.
Moreover, my XFree works fine, but when I go to text mode and go back to X (ie. Ctrl+alt+f1 alt+f7) my computer freezes.
So, I recompiled my kernel without rivafb and with vesa - recomendation I've found in this forum. I used this configuration now:
kernel /boot/kernel-2.4.25-gentoo root=/dev/hda1 vga=0x316
Now I have a message telling that my vga mode isn't correct. I chose one from menu and the same error related before (with rivafb) occurs. Also, my X freezes the same way.
I'm using the last stable version of all packages and my kernel is gentoo-sources.

I've compiled my framebuffer with vesa, and I use vga=791 and it works perfectly! I also disabled the penguin logo, if that helps... _________________ No-one's more important than the earthworm. |

For the framebuffer, I really think vesafb is the way to go. So, good choice.
Then you shoud carefully read documentation on framebuffer devices in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb.
In those documents you'll find a table presenting all the different resolutions that you can use with the 'vga=' argument.
Make sure that in any of your init scripts there is a call to fbset or something that could change your framebuffer settings.
Good luck ![Wink ](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |
