I unpacked portage and the large gentoo tar. Now I need to configure make.conf, but I don't see it anywhere? Is there a function I overlooked that I need to call?
Thanks,

Normally you would do something like this:
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
in order to do:
nano -w /etc/make.conf
However, if you did not do the cdroot you should be able to edit /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf. I'm not sure how far in the installation process you have come, what you have done and what you haven't done. So try have a look at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-quickinstall.xml (assuming you're installing on a x86 system) and indicate what you have done. |

Fire up your favorite editor (in this guide we use nano) so we can alter the optimization variables we will discuss hereafter.
Code Listing 15: Opening /etc/make.conf
# nano -w /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
