|
|
hey there!
i just bought a new hdd for my gentoo box.
the thing is i'm a bit n00b in those /dev things...
i have two IDE connectors that are occupied by my two other hdds, the burner
and the dvd drive.
on my A7V8X there is however a RAID IDE connetor. where my new hdd is now plugged in as master.
the bios is fine with it and the raid is set up stripe with one hdd.
what do i have to do to get the new hdd recognized by my gentoo?
where is the drive in the /dev folder? what do i have to build in the kernel?
thanx
for any help

Find out what the name is of the raid controller. Once you know the name find the kernel module (maybe you need to recompile the kernel) and load it. Now a new /dev enty will be made. Probably the new /dev entry will be /dev/hdg1 hdg2 etc. For more info see _________________ EASY TO INSTALL = Difficult to install, but instruction manual has pictures.

i found the ASUS A7V8X Specifications
where the Promise PDC20376 is listed.
and i found the
Code: |
Device Drivers --->
ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support --->
<*> PROMISE PDC202{68|69|70|71|75|76|77} support
[*] Enable controller even if disabled by BIOS
|
i don't know if those two are compatible, PDC20276 and PDC20376.
but i dried. and it's now in the kernel.
but there is now new hdd in /dev.
gives me:
Code: |
CPU: After generic identify, caps: 0383fbff c1c3fbff 00000000 00000000
CPU: After vendor identify, caps: 0383fbff c1c3fbff 00000000 00000000
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
ide0: BM-DMA at 0x9400-0x9407, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
ide1: BM-DMA at 0x9408-0x940f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:DMA
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: p1 p2 p4 < p5 p6 p7 p8 p9 p10 >
/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target1/lun0: p1 p2 < p5 p6 p7 >
|
and those two fellows are my old working hdds.
is there an other path in /dev where the raid connector put its drives?
thx

See this and this link.
It is under Device Drivers ---> SCSI device support ---> SCSI low-level drivers ---> Serial ATA (SATA) support.
It will be either the tc2/tx4 or sx4 module, you wil have to try both becuase i dont have one. Devices will show as /dev/sdxx.
Good luck _________________ EASY TO INSTALL = Difficult to install, but instruction manual has pictures.

so!
i didnt solve that prob with the ide raid connector.
i couldnt find a driver for that dumb s**t.
it should be the promise 20376, but there was nowhere a driver available.
neither directly for the kernel nor for the Fasttrack part.
so i gave back my new ide hdd and got an other one with sata!
that worked imediatly!
hth
