Hi guys,

I just recently did a reinstall of Gentoo due to my own stupidity in which lots of packages were broken beyond repair.

Anyways, I haven't had my graphics accelaration working for days.

What I had done was emerge both nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel, but when I did that, I got awful results because my monitor only outputted fuzzy, blocky, and distorted shapes. When I got the binary drivers from nvidia's website, this all changed. I could finally start X. However, I had to download nvidia-glx just to be able to use nvidia's opengl modules.

I then did opengl-update nvidia, made sure that load glx in my XF86Config was uncommented, and that load dri was commnted out, made sure my kernel had support built in for agpgart for my motherboard (VIA KT-400) , and then did glxgears. Here is what I got:

Code:
agrathwohl@Flybox agrathwohl $ glxgears
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

Here is my XF86Config file, as I know I will be requested for this anyway:

Code:

Section "Module"

# This loads the DBE extension module.

# This loads the miscellaneous extensions module, and disables
# initialisation of the XFree86-DGA extension within that module.

Do you have framebuffer support in your kernel? If so, this can often cause problems with the nvidia kernel module. You might want to try without the AGP support as well, as I believe the nvidia kernel module can provide this. Once you've messed with this, you will have to recompile nvidia-kernel, since its compiled against the kernel. Emerge the very latest nvidia-kernel from portage, as that solved all my problems, and make sure the version numbers match on nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx.

For further investigation it might also help to see the /var/log/XFree86.log.0. The fuzzy and distorted part also leads me thinking that the monitor specs might be off, according to your specs you'd have quite high quality monitor if I'm not mistaken?

Yes, I have a high-quality monitor. It's a 21 inch Hitachi SuperScan 814 (for those great days of image editing :))

Anyways, I do not have framebuffer support loaded into the kernel.

I am going to try to use the nvidia-kernel from portage instead of using the Binary drivers. I just hope I don't get the same results..

Thanks so far guys!
