Hmm. What is the machine going to be used for?

See it this way: Your files will be broken into stripes of a size determined by you. If that size is larger than, say, 50% of the files in your machine then you won't see the real benefits of striping.

If you are running something like video editing stuff or something like that which means large files then you will see a real benefit.

The downsides are pretty obvious: If your disks are not the same size then the size of the smallest disk will dictate the size used on the other larger ones. Also, if one disk goes down then you are basically scr*wed because your information is scattered acoss more than one disk. This is also the reason why RAID 1 (mirroring) is used with RAID 0 in production ready systems.

Exactly how to set this up for optimal performance for your system depends on several things, such as what you use the system for and most importantly, what your RAID controller is capable of. For example, large stripe sizes means better performance for random read and write operations if your controller allows independent reads and writes to the different disks. In other words, it is really hard to give you a detailed explanation of what is best. I would personally ask the maker of the controller card how they recommend RAID 0 being implemented using their hardware.

pretty much going to be used for workstation/desktop usage im not worried about disk size and the 2 disks i have are identical. im going to be moving lots of video files and also going to play dvds, make them, and maybe even play games on it. as for saving the files i have them on another box on the network.
