Just to check whether or not this component is, as I suspect, required for USB pens?

Yes, you are going to have to include this in your kernel for you pen drive to work. Even though it isn't really 'mass storage,' it uses the same protocols. I believe you are also going to need scsi hard disk support in your kernel. Then you should be able to mount the device which shows up in /dev/usb somewhere.

SCSI hard disc support? You sure? Is there anything else I should know about that depends on this element?

Many thanks.

I guess you just need scsi support and not the hard disk. Things should be mostly the same for the 2.6 kernel.

Hmm, further down that thread people seem to have problems without scsi disk support, and when I just plugged in my digital camera, it loaded that module (sd_mod), so I think it probably is required!

Well, under 2.6 "SCSI Support" is no longer an option, only a menu title, so I had to select SCSI Disc Support anyway.
