I am running kernel 2.6.5 and have a cannon s200 digital camera. How the hell do I get it to work :) ?

These are my setting in config

--- SCSI device support ? ?
? ? [*] legacy /proc/scsi/ support ? ?
? ? --- SCSI support type (disk, tape, CD-ROM) ? ?
? ? <*> SCSI disk support ? ?
? ? < > SCSI tape support ? ?
? ? < > SCSI OnStream SC-x0 tape support ? ?
? ? < > SCSI CDROM support ? ?
? ? <*> SCSI generic support ? ?

<*> Support for Host-side USB ? ?
? ?[ ] USB verbose debug messages ? ?
? ?--- Miscellaneous USB options ? ?
? ?[*] USB device filesystem ? ?
? ?[ ] Enforce USB bandwidth allocation (EXPERIMENTAL) ? ?
? ?[ ] Dynamic USB minor allocation (EXPERIMENTAL) ? ?
? ?--- USB Host Controller Drivers ? ?
? ?< > EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support ? ?
? ?< > OHCI HCD support ? ?
? ?<*> UHCI HCD (most Intel and VIA) support ? ?

<*> USB Printer support ? ?
? ?<*> USB Mass Storage support

dmesg gives me:

usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using address 3

when my camera is on and plugged in

however there is nothing in /dev/scsi or dev sda1

cat /proc/bus/usb/devices
T: Bus=02 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 3 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 1.10 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff MxPS=32 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=04a9 ProdID=3065 Rev= 0.01
S: Manufacturer=Canon Inc.
S: Product=Canon Digital Camera
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=c0 MxPwr=100mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 3 Cls=ff(vend.) Sub=ff Prot=ff Driver=(none)
E: Ad=81(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=02(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=83(I) Atr=03(Int.) MxPS= 64 Ivl=96ms

returns that so i know i know its there.

but...

cat /proc/scsi/scsi
Attached devices:

gives nothing

any help at all would be greatly appreciated, by the way i looked at every help and faq icould find on the forum and still cant figure it out.

You have to use gphoto.

emerge gphoto2

After you install gphoto2 and libgphoto2 you can use the nice pretty gtkam frontend, gthumb (file->import) or run in the command line gphoto2 --ahto-detect to see the camera.

In theory :)

I'm fighting with this now trying to get the USB system to even believe me that a camera has been plugged in. Works fine for a card reader but for some reason it won't do anything when my A70 is plugged in :(

As an aside, I just discovered the solution to my problem. Seems it helps if you *don't* get confused by the masses of wires on the desk and make sure the camera is actually plugged in while you're trying to get pictures off it. D'oh!

(sorry this isn't much help to you...)
