uinput + devfs (for bluetooth mouse)

I'm trying to get my bluetooth mouse (logitech mx900) working with gentoo, and i think i'm almost there, but can't get it working in X. I followed the instructions from

which all worked fine, including getting a message confirming the device was 'attached' with bthid, but setting up the uinput device in /dev has stumped me - i have a node at /dev/misc/uinput, but it doesn't seem to be doing much, i can't 'cat' it or anything. i think i need to put something in /etc/devfs.d/ but i'm not sure exactly what. can anyone give me a pointer?
