Hey to all you musicians out there,

I want to use instruments iv created in SSM in my rosegarden composition. Rosegarden see's SSM and adds it to the "Midi Software Device" channel, and I select my notation to be played through the correct channel. However, how do I make SSM output sound to Rosegarden?

I connect the Midi Module where I would connect the OSS module, select the correct channel, and hope for a responce. But I hear no sound. There isnt any decent tutorials out there, so im completely stuck.

Nice one

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the output you'll want from ssm is pcm audio, not midi signals.

Is rosegarden jack compliant?

Well, SSM supports OSS (im assuming alsa aswell since i dont have OSS installed) output, but also has a special "Midi Module", which im guessing outputs the signal to a midi channel.

Rosegarden is certainly Jack complient, but i dont think SSM is since u cant make a connection between the two programs in jack connections.

Rosegarden does detect SSM - it lists it in "Midi Software Device" section, with a input and output connection. But I havnt a clue how to get sound

SSM supports jack just fine.

Use the jack module.

(latest version works best)

ok, so I have routed the sound through Jack in SSM, which gives me sound output through SSM (distorted, but i can sort that out later).

However, rosegarden only sees SSM as a midi device if I have the MIDI module. Thing is, im not sure how to wire this up in SSM in order to hear sound through rosegarden

Cheers for your help btw, im one step closer

This is where my knowledge of midi peters out.

Are all the instruments you're using generated by SSM (using rosegarden as just a sequencer), or are some coming from rosegarden itself?

Because if they're all coming from SSM, surely you can 'record' the song without going back into rosegarden at all, just writing to a file with the diskwriter plugin. Or a jack recorder.

N.P.: It's good to see more SSM users. ;)

Well, at the moment all of them are indeed coming from SSM. But I was hoping that I could use Rosegarden's sequencing capabilities as opposed to those of SSM, since Rosegarden has 10 times the features, and has a much superior interface for sequencing.

Ill probly spend some time reading up on MIDI - the MIDI module in SSM is quite baffling, and I really dont know what Im doing :?

Well as I said there's no reason why you can't sequence from rosegarden, nab the midi signals in SSM and record the output in SSM.

Interesting idea! As a final question, how for example, would I take a single track from rosegarden, and output the midi signals to SSM?

Sorry for the endless questions, MIDI is quite obtuse to me.

Ditto. I understand the fundamental ideas, but apart from that CVs are about where it ends for me.
