|
|
Here I am, complete Linux noob two months ago now trying to install Gentoo (stage 1). I'm not too keen on having to start again when I realise I could have done something better in the installation, so this is basically a "is there anything I should know?" thread.
I've heard of pre-linking but I'm not sure how to enable it in everything I'll be emerging over the next few days, or whether that's a good idea. I'm going for an O2 optimisation on all compilations. Is there anything else I should be considering?
Thanks in advance, and I may well have more questions once the install is started. Let's hope not, I don't want to bother you guys too much |

Don't worry about doing pre-linking during the install. While it's "somewhat" possible, it really won't buy you anything at this point.
The big things to be aware of will be more system specific.
If you have SATA be sure to read the threads about SATA issues on this board.
If you are using the 2004.1 boot disc, take some time to read this thread.
Otherwise, follow the instructions closely, if you ever get confused jump on the #gentoo irc channel and ask. _________________ "Computers are useless -- they only give you answers!" -- Pablo Picasso |
Print out http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-quickinstall.xml and have it handy during install.
I have the entire handbook in a ringbinder by me right now
Thanks for the advice - I'll forget about prelinking for now then. I'll be using the 2004.0 Minimal disk - hope it can find my network card (it's wireless... Prism-based though, so it should work after modprobe orinoco I think :/)
*doesn't think he has SATA (you mean Serial ATA right?) but checks* |

yes I mean serial ATA. If you don't have it, that's fine. IF you do, it can be made to work but lots of people have pulled out lots of hair figuring out how It's one of those areas where Linux's support is there, but all the wrinkles aren't ironed out. _________________ "Computers are useless -- they only give you answers!" -- Pablo Picasso |

That's all about PCMCIA though, and I'm just using PCI. |

The process is nearly identical. It's about wireless, not busen.
Only diff is orinpco_pci, instead of orinoco_cs. |

Yeah, I found a useful website about my card specifically.
Anyway, it's currently in the middle of an emerge sync. Using the SMP kernel I didn't even have to modprobe any of the drivers - it worked straight out of the box, it was amazing. No problems so far, starting the bootstrap as soon as the Portage tree downloads.
This is far too exciting |
