Hey Everyone,
Just wanted a quick opinion on what program to emerge for IMAP mail. I'm trying to set up a mail server on my box and I'm thinking IMAP is the way to go. I'm thinking of setting up horde once I get the IMAP going.
All Opinions Are Welcome!
Thanks Guys |

Well, if your server is going to be a smallish server with only couple (dozens/hundreds) of user, almost anything will do. Maybe Courier would be a nice start. On the other hand, if you need extreme performance in large-scale environment, Cyrus is worth a look. In a small environment Cyrus is a total overkill and quite hard to administer, unless you have some previous experience from it. _________________ Yes, I'm the man. I'd go with courier as the ebuild works without any configuration, providing you are using maildir as your mailbox storage. |

second on courier...I use it for a small webserver that handles mail for about a dozen accounts. Works perfectly out of the box with .maildir _________________ -Rajl

Haven't used courier and I am sure its good. I have used cyrus for years and it is rock solid and very very powerful. I highly recommend it. It as some really advanced features as well. If you are going to run a mail server (irrespective of imap server) make sure you check out MailScanner for system wide spamassassin and virus scanning. I am not sure if Courier supports server side filtering or not??? but Cyrus does using Sieve. So if that is important you might want to consider using cyrus. I know most mail clients are going to support Sieve in the next couple of releases. Have fun! |

I use Courier w/ SSL and MailScanner for my setup as well. I am very happy with the performance of courier. The network is on the smallish side with only ~400 email users, we will see how it performs as it grows.
Never used Cyrus personally, but have heard nothing but good things about from others who use it in much larger enviroments. |
