I just installed Gentoo twice on this machine to make sure that I didn't make a mistake and besides I made a working Gentoo system on another PC. I installed Gentoo from the Live CD following the install guide. I did 'emerge grub' it worked fine it seemed but it got warnings like "'nic' is a shadowed global declaration" but only in ether* .c files it seems. I tried to use Gentoo anyway. Then I got GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB displayed on my screen over and over. I tried to emerge grub again and still no luck. What am I doing wrong? Do I need a new GRUB version it is 0.94-r1. Do I need to use LILO? If so how to I make sure I cleanly erase GRUB?

Grub should be fine.

Where is the error? Before your initial boot screen?

If so, something went wrong with applying the bootblock.

If after, something with grub.conf.

GRUB is ugly, not "easy-to-use"... In the times when this 3 was the only ones - RH, Slack and (last is nost Linux), what was the boot loader - LILO.

If u make a search thru forums.gentoo.org for bug(error) + lilo, and the same for GUB u will see the difference, in the begining of this forum - u will see sticky notes (GRUB errors).

LILO is secure enough (if u know how to make it, if not read forums, man), with LILO u can use bootsplash, GRUB needs external patch. LILO can be used on old systems like Pentium 133 with 2.0.xx kernel, with GRUB if u have the whole free time on the planet, to read and try, to fdisk, fsck disk and again and again u will not make it :)

My suggestion is LILO, security enough, friendly, stable (the last is most important), what will happend if u're boot loader crash with next update ? - Boot and fix from Live CD....

I get the error as soon as I turn on the PC and it goes through its POST checks. I get no GRUB splashscreen. Nothing. Except what looks like this.

GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB

I get this over and over.

OK, the bootblock did not apply properly. Can you revisit the Handbook?

I have some bad news for you guys.
I tried emerge lilo to use lilo and read the handbook and edited it like it says.
I got to LILO and finally have something displayed on my screen. I choose Gentoo from the LILO loader and it does,

Loading Gentoo..........................................................
BIOS Data Check Sucessful

Reboot

Samething Over and Over.

Is it actually possible that this system can't use Gentoo. I doubt it but I am not sure. I like Gentoo and really want to use it on this system but it is acting really funny.

I just fixed GRUB it loads it but now when I choose Gentoo it says some stuff about bzImage then reboots. Did I mess up on the kernel or the bootloader here?

The kernel.

You probably need to select the correct CPU type in menuconfig, then recompile the kernel.

For example :
If your CPU is an AMD K6-2 but you compile the kernel for a Pentium3, then the kernel will just reboot like what your machine is doing.

Just to defend grub, but i used to love lilo and hated grub but now i understand how it works its great, if you need to add a new kerne9hd1,4l or os you just add a line to /boot/grub/grub.config with no need to re-write the boot sector.
it seems much easier once setup than lilo
just gotta remember that mbr is (hd0) and boot if on /dev/hdb5 is (hd1,4).
as long as you remember the partiition no's start from 0 the only thing you have to wory about is the superblock on /boot becoming damaged (or / )
