Help! I have been trying to emerge xmms-1.2.10-r? for several weeks. In a last ditch effort, I have backed off to th 1.2.9-r2 version. No difference. Each and every time, it fails during some "autoconf" execution with the following error:

cd . && /bin/sh /var/tmp/portage/xmms-1.2.9-r2/work/xmms-1.2.9/missing --run autoconf
configure.in:49: warning: AC_TRY_RUN called without default to allow cross compiling
configure.in:444: warning: AC_TRY_RUN called without default to allow cross compiling
/bin/sh ./config.status --recheck
running /bin/sh ./configure --prefix=/usr --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu --mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var/lib --with-dev-dsp=/dev/sound/dsp --with-dev-mixer=/dev/sound/mixer --enable-vorbis --enable-oggtest --enable-vorbistest --enable-esd --enable-esdtest --enable-mikmod --enable-mikmodtest --with-libmikmod --enable-opengl --enable-nls --disable-ipv6 --disable-simd --disable-cdindex CC=gcc CFLAGS=-O3 -march=athlon-xp -funroll-loops -fprefetch-loop-arrays -pipe host_alias=i686-pc-linux-gnu --no-create --no-recursion
configure: warning: CC=gcc: invalid host type
configure: warning: CFLAGS=-O3 -march=athlon-xp -funroll-loops -fprefetch-loop-arrays -pipe: invalid host type
configure: error: can only configure for one host and one target at a time
make: *** [config.status] Error 1

!!! ERROR: media-sound/xmms-1.2.9-r2 failed.
!!! Function src_compile, Line 146, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

I have googled, searched, etc. and tried lots of workarounds (unsetting CC and CXX, using "-sandbox", upgrading autoconf) with no luck.

I have installed autoconf 2.59-r4.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, it's an odd one... Does it work if you try building it manually straight from the source code?
