OpenLDAP and courier-imap

I am looking for a way to make courier authenticate against my openldap server. I have read several howtos on accomplishing this with 'virtual' users, but I am interested in having actual user homedirs on the mail server where mail can be stored in maildir format.

My ldap users are able to login in to a terminal on the mailserver, but the imapd will not process the login.

I did build courier-imap with ldap in USE.

Has anybody accomplished this?
